The classic works of acclaimed director Tsai Ming-Liang will tour with stops in Los Angeles, Mexico City, Austin, and San Francisco in August 2025. The screening in Austin is scheduled to take place from August 21 to 24 at the Austin Film Society Cinema. The stops will feature a series of film screenings and discussions.
Tsai Ming-Liang has long been recognized as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary film. Tsai took home the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion for VIVE L'AMOUR (1994), only his second theatrical feature, but countless other accolades would follow. Even as Tsai's influence proved formative to a new breed of contemplative cinema, he's continued to walk his own path, crafting a unique oeuvre of wry humor, haunting stillness, queer desires, and urban anomie. In recent years, Tsai has gone even further off the beaten path, eschewing conventional channels of financing and distribution to focus on commissioned work, like the globe-trotting, ten-part "Walker" series. For his first visit to Austin, the Austin Film Society and the Austin Asian American Film Festival will present a selection of works from throughout Tsai's career, including ABIDING NOWHERE (2024), the first U.S.-set "Walker" project; a 35mm screening of the classic WHAT TIME IS IT THERE? (2001); Tsai’s inaugural teaming in DAYS (2020); and rarely-screened examples of Tsai's early TV work (BOYS 1991) as well as documentary forays (AUTUMN DAYS 2016).
With the support of Ministry of Culture from Taiwan, Tsai will personally lead the delegation for this special tour. He will be joined by his longtime collaborator and leading actor Lee Kang-sheng, as well as producer Claude Wang. Together, they will participate in discussions with local audiences, sharing the creative vision and filmmaking journey behind their works. The event offers a rare opportunity to witness the artistic excellence and cultural depth of Taiwanese auteur cinema on the international stage.
