According to Numbeo’s latest 2026 Health Care Index, Taiwan has once again ranked #1 in the world with a high score of 87.1—marking its eighth consecutive year at the top. Standing behind this remarkable achievement is a dedicated group of Taiwanese medical pioneers who never stop innovating and breaking new ground.
Recently, an expert delegation from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) Hospital and Taipei Veterans General Hospital, led by Superintendent Dr. William J.S. Huang and Vice Superintendent Dr. Shih-Hwa Chiou, visited Los Angeles. Director General Jason Ma and the Science and Technology Division of TECO-LA welcomed the delegation at our office and specially invited Dr. Peng-Sheng Chen, the Burns & Allen Chair in Cardiology Research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, to join the meeting and explore the significance of this visit.
During the roundtable discussion at our office, the delegation shared the fruitful outcomes of their Southern California trip. In addition to signing an official partnership agreement with AHMC Healthcare, the team conducted intensive visits to premier medical institutions—including City of Hope, UCLA Health, and Cedars-Sinai—to gain in-depth insights into the U.S. EPIC electronic health records system and the frontier applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical care and hospital administration
Dr. Chen also shared in-depth, practical experiences on how Cedars-Sinai leverages AI technology to automatically synthesize massive medical records and assist physicians in precision analysis and diagnosis. Superintendent Huang, Vice Superintendent Chiou, and the visiting specialists exchanged views on critical issues such as structural differences between the Taiwanese and U.S. healthcare systems, solutions for medical workforce shortages, and rural healthcare accessibility.
Equally moving was that despite their packed schedule, these medical authorities specially visited the Culture Center of TECO-LA—arranged by our Science and Technology Division—to host a public health seminar. Addressing core issues for middle-aged and senior citizens such as prostate health, vision care, lung cancer prevention, diabetes, and sarcopenia, the doctors personally answered questions for hundreds of Southern California compatriots, delivering the warmth of Taiwanese medicine directly to our overseas community.
Human-centric healthcare advances through technological breakthroughs and is fulfilled through compassion for life. TECO-LA will continue to serve as a steadfast bridge and logistical support, fully backing deeper talent exchanges and smart medicine collaboration between medical and academic institutions in Taiwan and Southern California—working hand in hand to create higher-quality, more compassionate healthcare for the world.
