Taiwan’s Representative to the United States, Ambassador Alexander Tah-ray Yui attended the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, on July 24. He delivered remarks that underscored the strength of the Taiwan–U.S. partnership to state legislators, policy leaders, and business representatives from across the United States.
Speaking before nearly 700 attendees at ALEC’s breakfast session, Ambassador Yui highlighted two historic milestones this year: the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election in 1996. These milestones reflect the enduring values shared by Taiwan and the United States—freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Ambassador Yui reaffirmed Taiwan’s steadfast commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait while strengthening resilience and safeguarding its democratic way of life. Highlighting the growing economic partnership between Taiwan and the United States. He noted that Taiwan is now the United States’ fourth-largest trading partner, while Taiwanese companies continue to expand their investments in the United States. He also emphasized that the United States is an important supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Taiwan. Taiwan and the United States can explore new opportunities to strengthen energy security, and advance sustainable development. Ambassador Yui expressed appreciations to kALEC and its Center for International Freedom for their longstanding support for Taiwan.
Ambassador Yui later addressed ALEC’s Task Force on Federalism, Homeland Security and International Relations, emphasizing that Taiwan–U.S. relations continue to grow stronger under the framework of the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances. He highlighted the PRC’s escalating gray-zone coercion against Taiwan, including disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining Taiwan–U.S. relations, its ongoing misrepresentation of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 to restrict Taiwan’s international participation, and its recently enacted Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law, which raises serious concerns regarding extraterritorial jurisdiction and human rights. Ambassador Yui called on state legislators to continue supporting Taiwan and to leverage their influence to strengthen grassroots partnerships and support for Taiwan across the United States.
Ambassador Yui also witnessed the Task Force’s unanimous adoption of a resolution reaffirming the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and preserving the status quo. The resolution further calls for the U.S. Administration to continue providing Taiwan with defensive arms and supports Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations.
