Director General Chou received the Legacy of Love Award from Food For The Poor (FFTP) on behalf of the Taiwan Government on 5/1. This award recognizes Taiwan's continued partnership with FFTP in poverty relief efforts in the Latin America and Caribbean regions over the past 18 years. In his speech, Director General Chou expressed gratitude for FFTP's joint efforts in pursuing charity projects and helping those in need.
During the award presentation ceremony, Director General Chou emphasized the importance of improving medical and healthcare conditions as a pivotal step towards poverty reduction and eradication. He acknowledged FFTP's focus on helping recipient countries build comprehensive public healthcare systems, and expressed Taiwan's willingness to share its extensive experience and expertise in this area. As healthcare is essential to people's livelihoods and knows no boundaries, Taiwan is committed to working with international healthcare networks.
Director General Chou also highlighted that due to political interference from China, Taiwan has not been invited to attend the World Health Assembly (WHA) since 2017. He urged FFTP to voice support for Taiwan's bid to participate in this year's WHA.
During the ceremony, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between FFTP and Taiwan's International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) was renewed. The MOU covers areas such as agriculture, healthcare, humanitarian aid, climate change, gender equality, and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The signing of the MOU was conducted by FFTP President and CEO Ed Raine and ICDF Secretary General Ambassador Timothy Hsiang, with Director General Chou and FFTP Vice President Mark Khouri as witnesses. This expanded cooperation between FFTP and ICDF will enable both organizations to reach out to even more people in the Latin America and Caribbean regions.
