Top Pop Bands from Taiwan Rocks 2012 CMJ Marathon


Chemical Monkeys, Da Mouth, and 831, three pop groups from Taiwan takes over Union Square Ballroom tonight. Representative of mainstream rock in Taiwan, all three bands impress more than 300 New York music lovers attending the showcase with their fresh style and outstanding songwriting talent.


In the pre-performance conference, group members expressed their joy of performing at CMJ marathon, one of the most acclaimed music festivals in New York. For most of them, it is their first to perform in New York and they have prepared for a long time. Members of “Chemical Monkeys” say they are influenced by Western rock bands such as Nirvana, and they try to blend in different music styles along with their own creativity. Appraised as “Black Eye Peas of Asia,” members of Da Mouth say they are happy about this compliment and they wish more people can get to know the unique music style of Da Mouth.


“Thanks to diverse cultures in Taiwan, our pop music has played a leading role in Mandarin-speaking music industry in Asia. Moreover, we wish that these excellent talents can be seen by more international audience. The Taiwanese bands participating in 2011 and this year’s CMJ have impressed local music lovers, and we hope to bring in more artists from Taiwan to New York,” said Susan Yu, Director of Taipei Cultural Center. The Taiwan Showcase at CMJ music marathon is supported by Ministry of Culture, Republic of China and its New York branch, Taipei Cultural Center (TPECC).



  • CHEMICAL MONKEYS (Pop Rock)

    Chemical Monkeys is a Taiwanese pop rock band established in 2008. All members have worked in the pop music industry for years as songwriter, producer and/or recording engineer. They released the self-titled debut studio album in 2010, which received wave reviews. Their second studio album “Right By Your Side” is recently released this year.
  • DA MOUTH (Hip-Hop, R&B, Electronic, Pop, Rap)

    Da Mouth is a two-time Golden Melody Award-winning Taiwanese hip-hop group. They are considered “the Asian Black Eyed Peas” due to their diverse backgrounds and widespread popularity.

    It rose to fame with their self-titled debut album and earned the Golden Melody Award for Best Group in 2007 and 2010.
  • 831 (Punk Rock, Electronic, Metal, Pop Rock, Hip-Hop)

    831 is a Taiwanese alternative rock band formed by five high school classmates in the summer of 2003, best known as the future successor of the top Mandarin Rock band, Mayday. 831 are also referred to as “the Asian Simple Plan” due to their versatile styles of music ranging from punk rock, pop rock, electronic, metal to hip-hop.
