Organized by GCA Entertainment, Taiwan Music Night returns to New York’s CMJ Music Marathon this October as part of Taiwan Music Express, a weeklong cross-cultural showcase of Taiwanese music. This event is made possible with the support by the Ministry of Culture (MOC), Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development (BAMID), and Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York. Taiwan Music Express opens with a press conference, held at the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) on October 21st 2:00 pm.
Taiwan Music Express will feature top Taiwanese artists representing three music genres: award-winning pop sensation and “born diva” A-Lin; solo rock artist, songwriter, and two-time Golden Melody Award-winner
Luantan Ascent; and internationally acclaimed rap artist and activist Dwagie. All three artists prepare some
special content for the audience of Taiwan Music Night: A-Lin will integrate the aboriginal ancient rhythm into
her performance, Luantan Ascent is going to perform classic songs in Taiwanese, Dwagie even prepares an English rap song for New York audiences. These artists will perform at Taiwan Music Night 2014 at Highline Ballroom on October 24th, 2014.
This year, I’m Here, a location-based App supported by messaging, chat room, audiovisual blogging capability
and sharing of real-time location with others, is in collaboration with Taiwan Music Express. Fans can
easily find the current location of their favorite artist with I’m Here, receive the latest news of our activities,
while sharing, chatting and watching performances with their friends. I’m Here is also linked with the official
CMJ Taiwan Music Express website and Facebook fan page to promote Taiwanese Pop Music.
On October 22 at 3:30 pm, Taiwan Music Express will be featured at CMJ Music Marathon panel, “Touring in the Greater Chinese Area and Asia-Pacific Region,” which will be held at NYU’s Kimmel Center. The panel will focus on the challenges of local and regional tours, as well as importing and exporting artists within the Asia-Pacific concert industry.
It all leads up to the Taiwan Music Night 2014 on October 24th at Highline Ballroom, with doors opening at 5:00 pm. A-Lin, Luantan Ascent, and Dwagie will present a showcase that will satisfy excited fans and introduce newcomers to a range of genres of Taiwanese popular music.
Artists Introduction:
A-Lin
Singer/songwriter A-Lin’s prolific pop music career includes numerous awards and three nominations for
Best Mandarin Female Singer at the Golden Melody Awards; six albums and two EPs released over the course of eight years; and performances in Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Incredibly popular in the Mandarin- speaking world, A-Lin is known as the “Born Diva.”
Dwagie:
Taiwanese rapper, songwriter, and TV personality Dwagie, best known for his use of Taiwanese dialects in his performances, is the only rapper from Taiwan to be featured in TIME Magazine, CNN, Reuters, The Times, L’Agence France-Presse (AFP), Süddeutsche Zeitung, and the Discovery Channel. His ground-breaking album releases demonstrate his desire to unite two worlds: his first solo album, Lotus from the Tongue, is considered the first full-length rap album in Chinese; his third album, Refuse to Listen, featured collaboration with Nas, uniting East and West.
Luantan Ascent:
Formerly the lead vocalist of Golden Melody award-winning 90’s alternative rock band Luantan, Luantan Ascent has since added the positions of composer, lyricist, producer, arranger, recorder, mixer and film score composer to an already-impressive resume. Since becoming a solo artist in 2002, Ascent has released nine albums of his own while also composing scores for TV and film.
