Since mid-November, Honduras has been severely hit by hurricanes Eta and Iota respectively. Economic loss amounted to $5 billion USD, and about 4 million people were affected.
On December 3rd, Director General Scott Lai, along with President Yeming Wu and representatives of the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of North America(TCCNA), met with Sofia Valverde, Consul of the Honduras Consulate in San Francisco to express their condolences towards families and victims hard hit by the disaster.
DG Lai stated that, with the combined efforts of TECO and the overseas Taiwanese community in the Bay Area, the Taiwanese people will be fundraising to help Honduras through this difficult period, which manifests the spirit of “Taiwan can help and Taiwan is helping.”
President Wu of the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce of North America has already taken the lead in fundraising for disaster relief, personally donating $1 million NT to the urgent cause. His organization will transport materials and resources collected in Taiwan directly to Honduras.
On behalf of the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce of North America, President Wu donated blankets and other necessary materials during the meeting, which Valverde accepted on behalf of the Honduran people. Her office thanked the Taiwanese people for their love and friendship, and stated that they would transport the materials to the Permanent Contingency Commission of Honduras for immediate distribution and use.
