The June issue of Taiwan Insights, the monthly e-newsletter of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in San Francisco, focused on the ongoing dispute between Taipei and Manila over the recent killing of a Taiwanese fisherman on May 9. The unprovoked killing and the subsequent handling of the investigation by Manila has caused a wide rift between Taiwan and the Philippines. The special report referred to a letter written by TECO’s Director General Bruce Fuh to regional leaders and journalists urging their support for a fair, transparent investigation into this incident by the Philippine government.
On a lighter note, this month’s Photo Gallery highlighted another place to experience authentic Taiwanese food in the Bay Area. And if you would like to make some of these dishes, you can likely get the recipe at iCook, a recipe sharing website in Taiwan. This popular website is the subject of one of the article in the Society section. Other Society articles include the growing popularity of triathlons and marathons in Taiwan and the island’s snakes.
In the Economy section, Taiwan Insights looks at Taiwan-made BB guns, which dominates 50 percent of the world market today. Already popular in survival games, BB guns are now regularly use by the US military for training and by actors in popular American TV shows. This issue also profiled Taiwan’s TXC, which is the third largest quartz crystal component maker in the world, considered the life blood of all smartphones.
After years of closer cross-strait relations, Taiwan and the mainland still do not have representative offices to help facilitate travel and business matters between the two countries. In this month’s Politics section, the meeting between KMT’s Honorary Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung and China’s leader Xi Jinping might finally change this.
In our Local section, Taiwan Insights introduce the upcoming performance of the Vox Nativa Children’s Choir on July 6. Performing in San Jose’s Jubilee Christian Center, this famed choir consists of aboriginal children from Nantou County, Taiwan. Also in Local News, two Taiwanese doctors, Jonathan Tsung-yu Ho and David Tsu-wang Shen, have invented a portable slit lamp at Stanford University.
Taiwan Insights draws on and summarizes Taiwan’s major newspapers and magazines, spotlighting its most recent political, economic and social developments. To read the articles on the June 21 issue, please connect to http://e2.ma/message/10m2b/960ze.
