In the morning of Friday, October 31st, ROC Ambassador to the Holy See Larry Yu-yuan Wang called on Cardinal Robert Sarah, President of the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum,” the Vatican Dicastery responsible for “carrying out special initiatives in the field of humanitarian actions when disasters occur.” During the meeting, Ambassador Wang explained that the ROC Government wished to provide a tangible contribution to the Mexican population, hardly hit by Hurricane Ingrid and tropical storm Manuel, both of which have left behind many casualties and great destruction.
The donation personally delivered by Ambassador Larry Wang came in response to the message of solidarity to the Mexican people expressed by Pope Francis in a telegram signed by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State, and addressed to Cardinal Francisco Robles Ortega, Archbishop of Guadalajara and President of the Bishops Conference of Mexico. In particular, the Holy Father asked people to show “fraternal solidarity in helping to rebuild the worst-affected areas and offering assistance to victims in their pain and despair.”
Ambassador Larry Wang told Cardinal Sarah that ROC Embassy to the Holy See promptly answered the Pope’s appeal for solidarity during this time of need, as Taiwan has always shown its concern and care for those who suffer and experience hardships.
Cardinal Sarah, on his part, heartily thanked the ROC Government for manifesting its concrete solicitude toward the Mexican people in order to alleviate their sufferings and expressed his confidence that the ROC Embassy and his Pontifical Council will continue to work very closely on humanitarian projects.
