On October 17, Ambassador Anthony C.Y. Ho and his wife, accompanied by Minister Paco Huang of the Embassy of the R.O.C. (Taiwan) to the Holy See, visited the Youth Sports Center in Lanuvio at the invitation of Bishop Vincenzo Viva of the Diocese of Albano. They attended an event showcasing the achievements of the Youth Empowerment Project, jointly supported by Taiwan and the Diocese.
The event brought together Lanuvio Mayor Andrea Volpi, Deputy Mayor Valeria Viglietti, parish priest Don Nicola Garuccio, and many enthusiastic young people from the local community.
In his remarks, Bishop Viva expressed his gratitude for Taiwan's continued support. Having visited Taiwan twice, he spoke highly of Taiwan's democracy, religious freedom, and commitment to world peace and universal human rights.
He also highlighted Taiwan's indispensable role in the global technology industry, emphasizing that Taiwan's support for local youth reflects the spirit of solidarity, mutual assistance, and friendship between Taiwan and the Catholic Church.
Ambassador Ho emphasized that young people represent the hope of the future and are a driving force for peace and progress. Echoing President Lai Ching-te's encouragement to young people, he urged them to pursue their dreams with courage and broaden their horizons by engaging with the world.
Ambassador Ho further noted that, guided by President Lai's "Value-Based Diplomacy" and Foreign Minister Dr. Lin Chia-Lung's "Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project," Taiwan continues to promote humanitarian assistance through its H.O.P.E. framework.
By working closely with the Catholic Church to support young people, Taiwan is putting the spirit of "Taiwan Can Help" into action and spreading hope around the world.
Mayor Andrea Volpi thanked the Taiwanese government and the Catholic Church for their cooperation in creating a safe, welcoming, and vibrant environment where local young people can grow and thrive.
He also praised Taiwan's important role in the international community and its courage in upholding democratic values and freedom, expressing his hope for continued friendship and closer ties with Taiwan.
Parish priest Don Nicola Garuccio explained that the Youth Sports Center became a reality thanks to the joint support of the Church, the local government, and Taiwan.
Beyond providing a space for sports and social activities, the center also offers psychological counseling services to help young people facing personal difficulties or emotional trauma. It encourages young people to participate in managing the center, fostering a sense of responsibility and civic engagement.
The event was filled with youthful energy and enthusiasm as young football players, wearing jerseys featuring the flag of the R.O.C. (Taiwan), took part in friendly matches.
The flags of R.O.C. (Taiwan), the Holy See, and Italy were also proudly displayed throughout the venue, symbolizing the friendship and solidarity that transcend borders.
