Medical travel has emerged as a major new trend in the world, referring to people going overseas to seek medical treatments like organ transplant, joint replacement, cosmetic surgery and etc. Unaffordable medical cost and long waiting list are the main factors contributing to medical travel.
Dr Wu, the CEO of Taiwan Task force on Medical Travel, said: Taiwan provides prompt and qualified medical service with affordable cost. For example, the total fee of coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) in Taiwan is only one-fifth to the US, and the expense of knee/ hip joint replacement is also 40% off than Singapore and Thailand. Taiwan indeed provides high-quality healthcare at very competitive prices compared to other countries in the world.
Recently, Taiwan’s government is actively rolling to promote medical travel. In 2007, the Department of Health (DOH), the Executive Yuan launches the “International Flagship Program for Medical Services”to set up an administration center, Taiwan Task Force on Medical Travel (TTFMT),which integrates the resources and supports from government organizations to make efforts to enable Taiwan as the next preferred Medical Travel Destination. Cooperated with the government organizations like Tourism of Bureau, Taipei World Trade Center, Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, Taiwan Nongovernmental Hospitals & Clinics Association, and many leading medical institutions in Taiwan, TTFMT proceeds to push ahead Taiwan healthcare across the globe. Nowadays, the new-born TTFMT is the institution taking whole responsibility to push ahead Taiwan healthcare across the world.
