Taiwan’s female badminton player Tai Tzu-ying is the world’s top player again. That’s after she won a match against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi Thursday afternoon. Tai became number one in women's singles in 2016 at age 22, and has ranked No.1 for 72 consecutive weeks since then.
The world’s number one badminton player Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan was at a press conference on Wednesday as the spokesperson for Chunghwa Telecom. Reporters asked her how she would feel if she were to become the world’s top player again after being dethroned for a few days due to changes in the ranking system. She said she wouldn’t feel any different. She said she only wants to use whatever she learns in her practices to compete in the matches.
China has dubbed Tai as “the invincible” after she defeated Chinese player Chen Yufei in eight consecutive matches at the Badminton Asia Championships finals in April. Tai humbly said that was only because she began training in the sport earlier than her opponent. She also said one win does not mean that she would always win.
In addition to donating NT$3 million (US$101,000) for Tai’s personal training expenses, Chunghwa Telecom also gave another donation of NT$2 million (US$67,000) for the Chinese Taipei championships in October. Tai will be in Taiwan for the competition.
