Little drummer boys: Brothers rack up 100 performances

Two brothers from Taoyuan in northern Taiwan are making a name for themselves as touring jazz drummers – that’s despite the fact the elder brother is not yet in middle school.
Liu Bang-chih is ten years old, his younger brother Wei-chen is nine. Bang-chih took up the drums just two years ago and claims to already know some 400 songs by heart. Wei-chen is not far behind – he started by watching his brother play before taking up the sticks for himself, with Bang-chih becoming the teacher.
The brothers quickly acquired the knack not just of playing but of performing publicly – they now hold five street performer licenses in the counties of Hualien, Chiayi and Nantou – no easy task even for seasoned performers. They have already racked up over 100 performances across the country.
Mother Chang Hsuan-sheng is very proud of her little drummer boys. A piano teacher herself, she found her sons wouldn’t sit still enough to tackle the keyboard, but their energy was perfect for the drums. She says the boys are also very good at saving up their money to buy new equipment.
