President Tsai Ing-wen announced on Wednesday that Morris Chang, the founder and former CEO of chip maker TSMC will represent Taiwan at this year’s APEC summit.
Tsai said there are several reasons why Chang is the best candidate to represent her at APEC, or the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. They include his stature on the global stage as well as his outstanding contribution to Taiwan’s tech industry. The president said Chang will have the full support of people from all walks of life for his new role.
"There is no better spokesperson for Taiwan’s tech industry than Morris Chang. I believe that, during his exchanges with world leaders, he will be able to show Taiwan’s achievements in the tech industry, as well as Taiwan’s contribution to promoting growth for small and medium businesses, " Tsai said. "I will show world leaders that Taiwan is a node in the global digital network."
Chang said he hopes to exchange views with leaders from around the world on how to make breakthroughs as a smaller economy. The 2018 APEC Summit will be held on November 17 in Papua New Guinea.
