Taipei, July 1 (CNA) Taiwan has donated US$500,000 to a nongovernmental organization that advocates for victims of sexual violence and aims to rebuild communities devastated by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). In a June 28 ceremony at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C., the nation's top representative to the U.S., Stanley Kao (高碩泰), made the donation to Nadia's Initiative. The initiative, founded in 2016 by Nadia Murad, advocates for victims of sexual violence and aims to rebuild communities in crisis, especially toward the Yazidis, an ethnic minority in Iraq persecuted by the ISIS.
Murad received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for her work on the initiative. The donation will be used to restore agricultural sustainability and promote de-mining activities in communities affected by ISIS, according to an American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) statement. The ceremony was attended by Kao and Murad, and was witnessed by AIT Managing Director John Norris, and head of the Office of Global Criminal Justice Kelley Currie, among others, according to the AIT.
Taiwan first announced that it would make the donation in February at the Defeat-ISIS Coalition foreign ministers' meeting hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the Department of State. Taiwan is a partner in the 80-member Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, which aims to eliminate the threat posed by ISIS.
