CJN: Buhari nominates Justice Mohammed for appointment

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, July 11, nominated Tanko Mohammed as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
In a letter to the Senate on Thursday, President Buhari requested for the confirmation of the Justice Muhammad as Nigeria's substantive CJN. The letter read by the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, during plenary revealed the request came on the heels of the recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC) on behalf of Muhammad, Daily Trust reports.
Moreover, the president sought the red chamber's approval for the appointment of 15 special advisers. Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended to President Buhari to appoint Justice Muhammad for the office.
The decision was reached at an emergency meeting headed by former president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Umaru Abdullahi.
A statement by the director of information of the NJC, Soji Oye, on Wednesday, July 10, showed that the decision followed a recommendation of the interview committee set up by the council. The council reached the decision after “candidates presented by the Federal Judicial Service Commission to it for appointment as Chief Justice of Nigeria" were screened.
